Grass Valley Summer 2017 Friday Night Coed Softball Season Playoffs

Misfits (3) 8-3-1 vs Paragon Hardwood (2) 10-2

The 6PM game pitted the Wyatt brothers against each other: older Brad versus Joey for the fourth time this year — twice in the spring and this game makes it twice for the summer. The past three times Joey's Misfits were too much for Brad's Paragon Hardwood team.

A warmish night, not really cold like Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were, which were really cold. The banter began as they parked their cars and trucks. "When we beat you." Came from Dave Hawkins, Paragon's pitcher told Joey as Brad pulled up and continued the banter with "We'll spot you 8 runs, but we don't want to get your hopes up."

Game Summary

Misfits started with a triple by Joey Wyatt and an error on the throw to third to score him in the top of the first, but got nothing else after that. Paragon's hitting woes began in the bottom of the first ending it with nothing. The top of the fourth Misfits scored 4 and allowed nothing for Paragon in the bottom of the second. Misfits scored 4 more in the third, but allowed only 3 runs for Paragon. Misfits scored 2 in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth while not allowing Paragon to score any more runs the rest of the game. Misfits wins with a 10 run rule in the bottom of the fifth with 9 minutes left on the clock.

Byers Bullets (4) 8-4 vs Beauties and Beasts (1) 12-0

Byers Bullets has not gotten over losing their last game to Fiedler Construction on September 29th — they would have been 9-3 and taken third place over Misfits. And the Undefeated Beauties and Beasts will be moving to the Friday D1 League even though they had several close games and a few of them they almost lost, but in the end their teamwork, skill level, and stamina were more than their opponents could handle which is the reason they need are moving to a higher league.

Game Summary

Playing with only four girls, and two of them were borrowed so they did not have to forfeit, Byers' team dynamics were not what they were all season, but they started out strong with 5 runs in the top of the first, but Beauties scored 6 in the bottom of the first. Top of the second Byers scored 2 runs, but allowed 7 runs, but that could have been more, but the umpire messed up.

With a 7 run rule still in effect for the playoffs, a team may only score 7 runs per inning if they are ahead. They can score 7 runs more than the other team.

The umpire did not mentally add the 2 runs from the second to the 5 runs in the first giving Byers 7 runs, he thought they only had 5, so when Beauties scored 6 in the bottom of the second that added up to 12, which is 7 more than the umpire thought Byers scored he stopped the inning, but was corrected when he noticed on the score card that Byers had 7 runs and that means Beauties could go up too 14. The inning continued with Beauties scoring 1 more run before Byers got the third out.

No excuse by the umpire, which was the Coed/Mixed President, (ME); however, it was my fourth night at the field and third time umpiring playoff games for the week. Monday was C2 Men's and Tuesday was B2 Men's; both nights were very cold. Wednesday was D2 Coed/Mixed, but he was there for the championship game to had out the trophies.

Byers Score only 5 more runs the rest of the game end with 12, and Beauties score 8 more ending with 21 and winning as time ran out with only one out.

Championship game:
Misfits (3) 9-3-1 vs Beauties and Beasts (1) 13-0

7 Innings, No Time Limit, and No 10 Run Rule after 5 innings. Lory thought the 7 run rule was out in the playoffs, but since the Coed/Mixed President enacted the rule, the Coed/Mixed President said it was still in effect for the championship game. Some players pushed for no home run rule, but that was not going to happen.

The umpire began to notice his voice was starting to go away. His loud "PlayBall, FoulBall, and Catch" calls were hard to get out and barely heard by players. He was hoping he could make it the whole game.

Misfits started slow with 2 runs and Brad Wyatt as the DBC (Designated Base Coach). Buster from Beauties wondered if hat was legal, and the umpire said there is no rule about a non-rostered team member from another team not allowed to base coach — there might be somewhere, but as it would not effect the game in a major way, it was allowed. Besides, there have been many base coaches in the stands not even rostered on any team, giving runners and players advice. It Is Rec Ball - Have Fun!

Misfits came alive in the top of the second with 8 runs and did not allow a run from Beauties. Misfits did not score a run in the third or fourth inning but Beauties scored 2 in the third and 5 in the fourth. After four it was Misfits 10 - Beauties 14.

Misfits ties the game in the fifth with 4 runs, but Beauties scored 6 in the bottom half making it 14 - 20 Beauties after five.

Misfits gave it a great effort in the top of the sixth with 4 runs and only behind by two, but Beauties, in the bottom of the sixth, scored 1 and hit base hits to run the clock out. Winning the first place trophy with a final score of 18 - 21.
